The Work Canvas: A Tool for Rethinking Work

I’ve come to realise that there are certain things we each need to consider if we’re going to change (or even just understand) our relationship with work. Over the adventure that has been The Work Project so far, there are things I’ve done that I’d like to share.

I’ve put this all together as The Work Canvas. Anyone can work through it to give yourself a visual picture of:

  • What you want to do.
  • Where to start.
  • What positive actions to take.
  • Who to ask for help.
  • Why you will succeed.
  • Your personal traits.
  • What you need from work.
  • How to position yourself.

Each of these things has been really important to me and it’s only by going through the crazy journey of The Work Project that I’ve been able to stand back and look at it all as one. I hope that by putting it together as a tool, it gives others a head start!

The Work CanvasHow to Use The Work Canvas

This is a simple, single page tool where the information you add to it is accurate at that moment.

All you need to do is download the PDF and add your information. That’s it!

Where you are, what you’d like to do and more will all evolve – work is an ongoing adventure, not a straight path. Review your Work Canvas regularly and keep the versions so that, over time, you get a picture of what you’ve achieved and how far you’ve come. You’ll surprise yourself!

Download The Work Canvas as a PDF.

Spreading the Word

Please feel free to use the canvas and share it with as many others as possible – it’s available under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license. I’d love to hear from anyone who does use it and maybe share some of your stories via The Work Project.

If you have any comments or feedback, or would like to suggest changes or updates, please do. This is a first version, based on my experiences in The Work Project so far. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that each journey through work is individual!
